Archway stands out as an ungentrified loner in Islington borough’s hinterland of Georgian terraces and Victorian garden squares.

The tone has been set by the car-choked Great North Road, the A1, which slices through the area. But change is coming.

A new hub has formed around Archway Tube station, where an ugly Sixties office tower has been remodelled into Vantage, a block of smart rental flats.

Meanwhile, an “island” site unreachable because of the traffic swirl has been opened up, following a road reconfiguration that makes life easier for pedestrians and cyclists.

And now comes an improvement to a formerly scruffy and uninviting patch below the historic bridge that gave Archway its name.

Richardson’s Mews has 25 apartments behind a restored Victorian red-brick façade, set back from the main road and buffered by sleek new shopfronts. All homes have outside space.

As well as being one of London’s original toll roads, the slope from Archway Road up to nearby Highgate Village was the route of Europe’s first motorised cable car. Today it is a 10-minute walk to the village and Highgate’s wonderful woodlands.
