Victorian London’s outward sprawl came to a halt in the south among the villages, fields and woodlands of Surrey. Semi-detached suburbia eventually swallowed them up, yet industry was never far away.

The River Wandle used to be one of the most polluted in England, with 68 water wheels powering tobacco, textile and brewing factories along its nine-mile route from Surrey to the Thames.

There has been a clean-up in recent years, with fish returning and parks and nature reserves created along its banks.

Mitcham, once known for lavender fields and watercress beds, is seeing a renaissance, partly due to Tramlink, which connects it to Wimbledon and East Croydon.
