An unusual Hobbit house-style holiday let has been listed for sale along with a four-bedroom former granary in the heart of the Brecon Beacons National Park in Wales.

Included as part of the package, the Hobbit House is currently run as a successful holiday let, with guests choosing to stay on the double-size sofa bed or in the main house's en suite ground-floor bedroom.

Rentals include the use of the quirky earth-covered outhouse, the patio area and a wood-fired hot tub.

“Until now The Shire felt like a fantasy land that we could only ever see at the cinema or on the television, but this remarkable property brings it to life," says Rightmove director Miles Shipside.

"The imagination of the current owners to create something so special and so unique is really quite incredible and I’m sure Castle Cottage will garner a lot of interest over the coming weeks and months."

The main house, once a grain store for the Castle Inn across the road, has a large kitchen-diner, a lounge and four bedrooms arranged over the ground and first floors.

Set in just under three acres of garden and adjoining land in Pengenffordd, which is about three-and-a-half hours' drive from London, the period package has been listed for sale for £385,000 through Clee Tompkinson & Francis.

"This property is not just for Hobbits," says sales and letting negotiator Suzanne Davison.

"It has a lot to offer along with the Hobbit House, in that you will also purchase a three-bedroom family home with an additional letting room, 2.75 acres including paddocks, gardens, polytunnel and a patio area with a wood-fired hot tub."

Currently, the Hobbit House, with its sofa bed and wood-fired cooker, is let for £60 a night during the summer months or £50 a night during winter. Use of the additional letting room in the main house costs £50 year round, including use of the hot tub.

Hay-on-Wye, with its famed annual literary festival, is less than 20 minutes' drive away, and there are extensive hiking routes just on the doorstep, up, over and around Waun Fach, the highest peak in the Black Mountains of southeastern Wales.

So all in all, there’s plenty for guests — and the home's next owners — to explore.
