As part of a planning deal between Lambeth Council and Canary Wharf Group, which is redeveloping the Shell Centre on the South Bank, 70 council rent and 19 private new homes are being built at Lollard Street, Kennington.

The local authority has freed up the land by redeveloping a nursery site.

Award-winning architect Darling Associates has designed a classy low-rise scheme clad in warm brick that slots neatly into a mixed neighbourhood of period housing, tower blocks and a 1960s listed school, recently converted into loft apartments.

The site borders fabled Lambeth Walk — postcode SE11 — and is so close to the Palace of Westminster that it falls within the parliamentary Division Bell.

Flats start at £485,000, while 1,385sq ft townhouses cost from £895,000.

Lambeth council is reinvesting the proceeds from these sales into more social housing and there will be a new nursery as part of local development. Call 020 7718 5220.
