Best of both: new-build flats in north-west London with fast commutes and quick access to the countryside

These gated-estate flats offer a great commute but fast links to the countryside, too.

Railway expansion gave birth a century ago to "Metro-Land", suburban areas with modern homes in the counties of Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Middlesex that were served by fast trains to central London — in the countryside but close to the city.

North-west London was the powerbase of the pioneering Metropolitan Railway, the greatest of the Victorian-era train companies. In 1863, its first line connected Paddington, Euston and King's Cross mainline stations to the capital's financial heart in the City.

Later the Metropolitan line was extended to Harrow and eventually it reached Verney in Buckinghamshire, more than 50 miles from Baker Street.

Along the way, the company built workers' estates at Neasden, Willesden Park and Cricklewood and garden villages at Pinner, Moor Park and Wembley.

As the city sprawled during the 20th century, some of these places lost their allure, but north-west London is back in favour with buyers seeking that elusive combination of an affordable home and a manageable commute.

Northwood is one of these prosperous suburbs offering fast links to the centre and quick access to the countryside.

Launching this week is Silverwood a handsome new-build project of 24 flats in a gated estate with landscaped gardens and secure parking. Prices from £399,995. Call 01923 775577.
