Pretty Hogarth’s House is an incongruous presence sitting alongside part of the roaring A4 Great West Road between Hammersmith and Heathrow. But the listed Chiswick building where the eponymous 18th-century English artist lived backs on to 65 acres of grounds that seem a million miles away from the busy dual carriageway.

Hogarth Views, a development of 19 apartments, is part of this estate and overlooks the artist’s old country retreat. The Victorian building started life as a commercial laundry, with offices on the upper floors, in the days when Chiswick was changing from a sleepy village to a busy riverside suburb.

A Thirties-look revamp has provided smart, modern, loft-like spaces with big windows and hi-tech extras. A home-automation system dims the lights, closes the curtains, turns on the heating and runs the bath via an iPad or smartphone, and there is facial recognition camera security. Prices from £450,000, including off-street parking. Call Haus Properties on 020 8742 7577.

Chiswick Gate is a much bigger development close by. Built on the site of a former shoe polish factory, it has 44 townhouses and 79 apartments. The vast underground car park allows townhouse residents to step straight from their vehicle into their home via a separate basement entrance. This frees up the ground floor for formal communal gardens and children’s play areas.

There will also be a gym and concierge. Prices from £599,950 to £2.54 million. Call Berkeley Homes on 020 3725 8999.
