Gallery views: luxury development on Camberwell Green includes shared-ownership flats in sought-after Zone 2
More than a century after Peabody built an award-winning red-brick estate at Camberwell Green, the housing charity has returned to almost the same spot with a new development of homes, including shared-ownership flats.
Homes in the original nine-block estate, which cost £30,000 to build and opened in 1911, had pioneering self-contained plumbing. Another "innovation" were living rooms with glazed doors to small balconies.
Fast forward and Peabody's new scheme also overlooks the Green, which for decades felt like a traffic island surrounded by humdrum shops. However, it has now been upgraded into a town centre park.
Called The Gallery, the new development is a modern version of the Edwardian tenements opposite.
The brick-clad blocks incorporate communal roof gardens and an underground car park.
Barely three miles from Trafalgar Square, Camberwell's leafy slopes are the first high point reached when travelling south of the river from central London.
It's crowded and colourful, with a deep-rooted arts scene centred around Camberwell College of Arts.
Peabody is giving over part of its marketing suite to showcase local artists.
Yet Denmark Hill station on the Overground, with direct rail services to Farringdon, is poised to be a major transport hub once Crossrail is running.
