Canning Town, once a gritty East End working-class district known for boxing clubs and pearly kings and queens, is attracting creatives and cultural organisations from across London with a smart new wave of housing.

If you can't afford a Canary Wharf flat but want to be close to its 320 shops, cafés and bars, nearby Canning Town is 30 per cent cheaper.

Orchard Wharf has 338 apartments in two buildings fronting the River Lea.

As well as flats in a 23-storey tower, there will be a crescent of stepped-height apartments plus three rooftop gardens for residents. Prices start at £460,000. Help to Buy is available.

The Liberty Building: prices start at £845,000 for a two-bed flat

The Liberty Building is another new high-rise on the doorstep of Canary Wharf, near Crossharbour DLR station. Telford, the developer, is offering a free interior design package, right down to cutlery. Prices start at £845,000 for two bedroom flats.
