Charming Silver End in Essex was conceived as a model village by industrialist Francis Henry Crittall, of iconic metal windows fame.
Built in the Twenties, the village housed Crittall factory workers and boasted a department store and the UK's largest village hall, with dance floor, cinema, library, snooker room and health clinic.
Plans for a hospital and swimming pool were thwarted by the Great Depression.
At the time, the Bauhaus-inspired houses were revolutionary, with white rendered façades, flat roofs, large front and rear gardens, indoor loos and hot and cold running water.
Yet most were bulldozed in 2008. Now Redrow has built 350 Arts and Crafts-style houses.
