A CNN fact checker has accused Donald Trump of telling an "avalanche" of lies during the first 2020 presidential debate.

Daniel Dale published an article on Wednesday analysing the debate between the President and Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden which took place on Tuesday evening in Cleveland.

Mr Dale wrote that there were moments in the debate when "almost every comment" from Mr Trump was "inaccurate" while Mr Biden was "largely accurate" with his statements despite a handful of misleading claims.

"Trump used the debate to spread disinformation about mail-in voting and repeated many of the false claims that he has been making all year — including the lie that mail-in voting leads to massive fraud," he wrote.

Another alleged lie told by Trump is the idea that the Obama administration is "spying" on his campaign.

Although the US has seen isolated incidents of voter fraud, there is no systematic vote-rigging, including with mail in ballots, Mr Dale said.

Mr Dale also highlighted Mr Trump's claim that his predecessor Barack Obama's administration - including Mr Biden — spied on the president's 2016 election campaign.

During the debate Mr Trump said: "There was no transition because they came after me, tried to do a coup, came after me spying on my campaign."

Mr Dale wrote that although Trump aides were investigated by the FBI under then-president Obama, it was due to the aides having extensive contact with Russian officials amid fears of Kremlin meddling in the US 2016 election.
