Hounslow is more of a suburb of Heathrow than of London, which is why, if the controversial airport expansion goes ahead, the area will get a jobs boost that will further drive up the demand for local housing.

Because of aircraft noise, Hounslow has historically been considered a better place to work than to live.

The planes may have put off many buyers in the past but now a town centre makeover, with several important office-to-residential projects, is attracting first-time buyers.

Habitō is a new-build eco-project with 37 apartments, a residents’ gym and three “urban garden sanctuaries” — communal retreats inspired by Roman remains uncovered during construction.

Flats start at £335,000, and there is a penthouse for £650,000. Call 020 7969 2709.

Outside the town centre is The Staging Post, a new neighbourhood being built by Notting Hill Housing Association. Surrounded by 48 acres of parkland, it is still only a six-minute walk to Hounslow Central Tube station.

Prices start from £325,000, with shared ownership available. Call 020 3815 2222 for more information.
