With Brixton on one side and Peckham on the other, the most surprising thing about Camberwell is that it isn’t already thoroughly gentrified/hipsterised.

These surprisingly leafy streets have somehow remained under the radar for buyers easily seduced by Brixton’s transformative ascent or the hype surrounding Peckham.

First-time buyers keen to live in a neighbourhood of fine Georgian and Victorian terraces, where locals hang out at great pubs like the Camberwell Arms or enjoy a slice at Theo’s Pizzeria, where visits to the South London Gallery and the Camberwell Green Farmers’ Market on a Saturday are a must, and where open space is plentiful, can now do so for less than £140,000.

Housing association Hyde New Homes has a new launch of shared-ownership properties at Wing, a series of new low-rise buildings around a central square, earmarked for those who could not otherwise afford their own home in the area.

Prices start from £139,000 for a 40 per cent share of a one-bedroom flat, ranging up to £203,875 for a 35 per cent share of a four-bedroom apartment.

Mod cons include fitted wardrobes, master bedroom en suite bathrooms with underfloor heating as standard, and stylish kitchens with LED lighting.

For those who work from home, or are just glued to their computers when they are at home, there is hyper-optic fibre broadband.

The location, on Camberwell Road, isn’t exactly peaceful, but on the plus side both Camberwell Green and Burgess Park are within a relaxed 10-minute walk.

“We’re delighted to finally announce the launch of shared ownership at Wing,” says Minnie Dando, head of marketing at Hyde New Homes.

“We wanted to build a development that would add a sense of community to its locality and also make the homes achievable for all. With its buzzing location, it’s the perfect home to return to after a day of working in the City.”

Transport is always a crucial factor when choosing a home and Wing is a 13-minute walk from Denmark Hill station in Zone 2, which has services to Victoria taking just nine minutes.

There are also local buses, or the option of walking the mile or so to Oval Underground station on the Northern line.
