For most people, Feltham in outer west London is famous for two things —being the childhood home of rock legend Freddie Mercury, and also as the location of Feltham Young Offenders Institution.

For most of the 20th century, the town had a traditional-looking high street, with mock Tudor shopfronts and a medieval manor house.

Along with original railway cottages, these fell victim to Sixties town planning, but a fresh town centre makeover is helping to revive affordable Feltham.

One High Street is a gated scheme of 37 low-energy flats opposite the station.

The homes will appeal to first-time buyers who want greenery around them as well as a quick commute to central London. Trains to Waterloo take 29 minutes.
