Detectives investigating the death of an Arab prince and fashion designer at his Knightsbridge penthouse were today waiting for the results of specialist tests to determine how he died.

Staff found the body of Sheikh Khalid bin Sultan Al Qasimi, 39, at his apartment early on Monday after reports of a party the previous evening.

He is the second son of Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi the ruler of oil-rich Sharjah, the third biggest city in the United Arab Emirates, where three days of national mourning have been declared.

Police are treating the death as “unexplained” and a post-mortem examination was inconclusive.

It comes as tens of thousands of people attended his funeral today in the United Arab Emirates.

His father, Sheik Dr Sultan bin Muhammad al Qasimi could be seen in photos standing over his son's body as he joined the prayers at the King Faisal Mosque in Sharjah at 9am local time.

During the ceremony, his body was flanked by the leaders of the four Northern Emirates.

They were Sheik Saud bin Saqr, ruler of Ras Al Kaimah, Sheik Humaid bin Rashid, ruler of Ajman, and Sheik Ammar bin Humaid, Crown Prince of Ajman.

The funeral will be followed by the three days of national mourning across the UEA with flags flying at half mast.

The prince, a Central Saint Martins architecture and fashion design graduate, was co-owner of the Qasimi label.

The family own a country estate in Sussex, where Sheik Khalid's older brother, Sheikh Mohammed bin Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi was found dead from a heroin overdose in 1999 at the age of 24.
