The annual Oxford versus Cambridge boat race is nearing and the route takes in the best of the Thames.

The famous boat race between the two universities first took place in 1829 when two school friends who were studying at the rival universities set a challenge.

The first race took place in Henley-on-Thames but the modern day route starts at Putney Bridge and passes through four miles of prime property areas including Fulham, Hammersmith, Barnes, Chiswick and Mortlake finishing at Chiswick Bridge.

Of course, no-one would buy a home to use on just one day a year and aside from offering the best views of the race on the day, these riverside properties also have year-round appeal.

From period properties that overlook the start line to a Georgian four-bed house that sees the winning team come in, light-filled, open-plan and grand homes are the order of the day.

There are apartments, maisonettes and family homes with their own private gardens, roof terraces and balconies. A former pump house sensitively transformed into flats offers added historic heritage.

In Putney, a charming three-bedroom property overlooks the starting point of the race, while in nearby Barnes, a Grade-II listed house sits directly opposite the river with its balcony offering glimpses of the Blues as they pass by.

North of the river, in Hammersmith, is a Victorian three-bed that takes in all the sights of the race from its private roof terrace.

A four-bed house in Chiswick offers floor-to-ceiling windows and an open-plan living space, with a roof terrace and its own Jacuzzi.

Nearing the finish line of the race, in Mortlake, is a delightful Georgian family home offering views of the winning team.

Take a tour of some of the best riverside homes currently for sale, with ultimate views over the race.

The Boat Race is on Saturday, March 24. The main women's race starts at 4.31pm and the men's race starts at 5.32pm.
