Hampstead has been fashionable for three centuries, since early Georgian times when its high-lying village gained a clutch of handsome houses.

Every age that followed brought new architectural versions, from grand Victorian villas to Bauhaus-inspired flats to blingy Bishops Avenue mansions.

With a 790-acre heath, a protected garden suburb, an ancient village, old pubs, plus golf courses and good schools as well as 15-minute Tube links to the West End, arguably Hampstead has it all — if you can get up the hill in rush hour.

And avoid it during the school run, when leafy, narrow streets are stuffed with polluting 4x4 vehicles.

Novel House: an architectural throwback to the art deco period

Local conservationists keep property developers at bay, especially in the heart of the village, but occasionally a sensitively designed block gets the green light.

Novel House is the first block of new-build apartments for two decades.

Tucked away on New End, just off the high street, the building replaces a nursing home and is an architectural throwback to the art deco period.

This modern mansion block has 17 apartments with interiors featuring marble, cast bronze, bespoke oak joinery and 10fthigh ceilings.

All flats have either a spacious terrace or balcony with sweeping views, and there is underground parking, a gym and concierge.

Prices from £850,000. Call Savills on 020 7409 8756.
