Now fashionable, the riverside neighbourhood of Sands End was a cut-off corner of Fulham 20 years ago, blighted by a gasworks and dissected by train tracks.

Helped by a flourishing community of interior design and homewares companies, developers have transformed the area into an enclave of flats and houses.

Chelsea Harbour, built in the Eighties alongside a muddy inlet, paved the way. Later came Imperial Wharf, a 1,600-home neighbourhood with a new railway station and a riverbus pier. Now Chelsea Creek has been added to the mix.

The creek is for the most part a subterranean stream that flows in from the Thames, but two new canals and a dock with moorings have been created, with homes built alongside the waterways and tree-lined avenues.

Fairwater House is the latest unveiling at Chelsea Creek, with flats and penthouses priced from £880,000. The show flat, with interiors by Italian fashion house Roberto Cavalli, is worth a visit.
