In the blink of an eye, Borough has gone from fringe to fashionable — not just the colourful food market but the wider area covering a wedge of the SE1 postcode between the Thames and Elephant & Castle.

This is Tate Modern and Shard territory, a central address for the Square Mile or the West End.

When Borough “arrived” as a property hotspot about a decade ago, new homes were mainly small warehouse and office conversions, snapped up by loft-loving locals.

Now Borough is luring rich buyers from posher parts of town, attracted by a second wave of development.

Brandon House: includes mews houses with roof gardens as well as smart flats and penthouses

Brandon House, the latest launch, includes mews houses with roof gardens as well as smart flats and penthouses, reflecting demand for more upscale homes.

The scheme sits at a busy junction opposite Borough Tube station, but many of the homes overlook a quieter courtyard.

Two-bedroom flats cost from £899,000 and houses from £2,095,000. Call Crest Nicholson on 020 3437 1101.

This new year could prove to be a good time to buy in Borough, with a £300 million project bringing new restaurants, fashion boutiques and a private members club, expected to open next year.

On the edge of the historic market area, the three-acre site includes the refurbishment of Victorian railway arches previously occupied by Vinopolis.

This will create an internal shopping street packed with new and established brands and open up now-inaccessible passageways and courtyards, all in keeping with the cobbled streets and artisan feel of the main market.
