The chance to the own the best house in the world doesn’t come along often, but this property has just that claim to fame.

A long-term favourite for Britons, thanks to the language and its amazing climate, the Rock is home to some of the most lavish homes in Europe.

New Aloes is the creme de la creme of even these, and in 2014 the International Property Awards recognised the contemporary masterpiece with its highest honour.

It not only won best property in Gibralter and best in Europe, but best in the world.

You can understand the judges’ enthusiasm when you see the seven-bedroom house, complete with six bathrooms, garage parking for 10 cars, a pool, a spa and Jacuzzi, and stunning setting.

Sitting in the south district of the tiny 2.6 square mile enclave, the house sits in a quarter of an acre of land that was once home to a Ministry of Defence complex.

The dozens of olive trees are over a century old.

As well as 4,300 sq ft of terraces, providing the most lavishly appointed of entertaining areas, there is over 6,000 sq ft of landscaped gardens with views of Spain and across the Med as far as the Rif mountains of Morocco.

The garden was paid a great deal of attention and, something rarely seen in Gibraltar, is full of plants, shrubs and flowers. Dozens of 100-year-old olive trees are dotted around the estate, along with the native aloe vera plant for the ultimate in natural healing.

The gardens were zoned to provide areas for rest and relaxation, entertaining and even exercise.

A black river stone waterfall runs through the gardens to the thatched bar, below which is an amazing circular two-level pool surrounded by a deck and viewing platform.

A stream from the pool leads to the infinity swimming pool which features remote controlled coloured LEDs and water jets.

Sunsets don't get much more glamorous than this one over Africa.

On the second floor, there’s a fitness suite, complete with sauna, heated spa pool with hydro-massage beds, facing south-west to let bathers enjoy the best of the sunsets.

On the top floor, a glazed observatory-style viewing area provides the furthest views, while there are two roof terraces up here, too.

With such generous outdoor facilities and the forgiving climate, it might be easy to forget going inside the 9,500sq ft house, but don’t!

The living area runs to 1,200 sq ft alone, letting you bring inside guests from the largest of gatherings.

Catering can be done from the 600sq ft kitchen and of course there’s a cinema room for nights in in front of the big screen. The bathrooms are fitted as wet rooms and all have rain showers.

In a house like this, you’d expect - and receive - gadgetry galore and there’s a lift to all floors, the terrace doors are electrically opened, as are the window blinds, lighting zones can be programmed and controlled remotely and the wardrobes even light up when you open the doors.

When you want to return to Britain, flights from Gibraltar airport to Heatrow and Gatwick take less than three hours.

New Aloes is for sale with Chestertons for £10.9million.
