Battersea’s heartland of Victorian terraces and red-brick mansion blocks appeals to those who do not want to be part of the strip of new homes being built around the power station at Nine Elms.

The old village, back from the river, is just discernible around pretty cobbled Battersea Square, at the top of the High Street where it butts up against a typical London mix of council estates and conservation areas.

Among the latter is the Little India enclave, with road names including Cabul, Afghan, Khyber and Candahar, while Shaftsbury Estate, built in the 1870s for the working classes, has neat cottages that are now popular with professionals.
