For fashion designer and author Mary-Kate Olsen, one Manhattan townhouse just didn’t cut it so she bought two neighbouring properties in the East Village.

She lived there with her French banker husband Olivier Sarkozy, brother of French former president Nicolas.

Olsen and Olivier moved from there to New York City’s super-luxe Turtle Bay neighbourhood, and a home inspired by the Palace of Versailles.

Their former homes are on the market at £5.9 million and £6.4 million. The current owners are artist Aaron Young and his wife Laure Hériard Dubreuil, French-born chief executive of luxury retailer The Webster.

Both homes are every inch as chic as expected, with fabulous floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Greenwich Village.
