Albany, the prestigious 18th-century former Piccadilly mansion next to the Royal Academy, was built for the 1st Viscount Melbourne before being turned into “sets” — studio flats — for London’s aristocratic bachelors in 1802.

Famous residents have included Lord Byron, Aldous Huxley, JB Priestley, Love Actually film star Bill Nighy and Tory MP Jacob Rees-Mogg, and the building has featured in the works of Charles Dickens, Oscar Wilde, Arthur Conan Doyle, PG Wodehouse, Ian Fleming and, more recently, Julian Fellowes.

You no longer have to be a bachelor to live there, so women can apply for the rare chance to rent a set.

Dexters Mayfair is marketing one for £311 a week including bills.

Tenants must be vetted by Albany’s board of trustees.
