London design stores have shut their showrooms but they are still trading by phone and live chat, taking online orders, giving virtual advice and delivering — safely — to your door.

They’re also offering a bumper batch of quality items at bargain prices for spring, to customers with the time on their hands to make carefully considered choices.

Home office essentials, storage and garden furniture are flying out, while bedrooms are getting revamped as shared households crave their own space round the clock.

Sofa upgrades ease the strain of all that non-stop TV watching and gaming. Cosy cushions, rugs and throws are the design equivalent of comfort food.

Several stores have newly expanded “clearance”, with big bargains on big-ticket items including sofas and design classics, although some stores can’t do two-man deliveries.

The large chains are also running offers.

At Heal’s, chief executive Hamish Mansbridge says: “We’re very much alive, taking orders, with a warehouse up and running.”

Deliveries are “safe” and free. “Customers have comfort as a top priority,” adds Mansbridge. “Anything from a couple of cushions to a new sofa.

“Desks and leaning furniture are good for home working, and we are all furnishing the garden.”
