From Pantone’s colour of the year to Wes Anderson-inspired pieces, bright hues and motivational spaces are the biggest interiors trends of 2018 so far.

A kitsch theme and bold prints are among the most searched for decorating trends this year, according to social sharing site Pinterest, as users look for on-trend colours, neon signs and Seventies design in which to deck out their homes.

Here are the top trends searched for on the site so far this year.

Ultra violet

The colour purple is certainly on the rise and the most searched for interiors trend for 2018 is "ultra violet", Pantone’s colour of the year.

Saves for the term, and similar purple hues such as lavender and mauve, are up by a staggering 2,675 per cent.

Wes Anderson

Candy pink, inspired by Wes Anderson films such as The Grand Budapest Hotel, garnered a lot of searches, as did Twenties-inspired patterns and posters.

Positivity

Users want to make their homes a more positive space, with motivational prints, uplifting colours and a place that adopts the "self care" approach a major concern for homeowners.

With more of us working from home, it’s not surprising that we want to make our home offices as stress-free as possible.

Creating a space that boosts our mindset has moved up the search terms, with saves for "positivity" increasing by 430 per cent.

Maximalism

Maximalism, the trend where more is more, also dominates Pinterest’s search terms in the UK.

From kitsch design details to experimenting with colour throughout the home, Pinterest users are keen to make the most of their space, while maximalism creates a statement theme for living areas.

Back to the Seventies

Terrazzo is a trend that sticks and homeowners are using the mixed material in their kitchens and for tiling in particular.

Another Seventies classic making a comeback is fringing, which is on everything from cushions and curtains to mirrors and lamps – saves are up on terrazzo by 305 per cent, while fringing is up by 157 per cent.

Face up to it

Rugs and wall hangings featuring faces are increasing in popularity. Simple line drawings and silhouettes are dominating the walls of our home, too, and saves for line art increased by 120 per cent this year.

Banish the blank box

Those looking for inspiration for adding character to new-build homes were 133 per cent up over the last year, while DIY solutions for people living in rented accommodation, such as hanging pictures without nails, were up by 197 per cent.

Interiors is one of the largest categories on Pinterest and UK users save more than 12 million decorating ideas every month.

The social sharing site recently announced the winners of its Best of Pinterest UK Interiors Awards. These were selected across seven categories and UK users nominated their favourite British interior ideas in categories such as Best DIY and Best Restaurant Design.

The winners were judged by the London Design Festival and Pinterest UK’s editorial team.
