This weekend is the wake-up call for your home lighting revamp, after the clocks have gone back and the dark evenings begin. But you don’t need major renovations.

For an uplifting mood change, plug in and switch on an eye-catching table or floor lamp, or install fresh wall lights with extra-long flexes.

Easy-fit lighting transforms a room, creating soft shadows, light “pools” and accents. And if you rent, you can take it all with you when you move.

Arty statements at Heal’s

A Festival of Light fills the windows at Heal’s with arty statements — and there’s 20 per cent off Heal’s own brand.

Or “live chat” online with experts who can send photos/videos direct from store (until Nov 3 at 196 Tottenham Court Road, W1; heals.com; 0333 212 1915).

Unashamedly decorative at Habitat

Light bulb moments: top home lighting tips

  • Layer lighting and have multiple light sources
  • Combine ambient lighting with task lighting and accents
  • Hide lighting in shelving for a soft glow
  • Use LED strips on kitchen wall units
  • Bulbs with a colour temperature of about 2700K give a pleasantly warm light
  • Bathroom lights must be waterproof, so check the IP (ingress protection) ratings

These tips are from Luke Thomas of lighting specialists John Cullen, 561-563 Kings Road, SW6 (020 7371 9000).

A lighting workshop will be held on Nov 5 at 6pm (£35; johncullenlighting.com).

In the huge Habitat flagship, lighting is unashamedly decorative — with glass as a major material.

“We’re moving away from that industrial look,” says Clare Griffin, lighting buyer.

Also selling fast are rattan and bamboo, “for a slightly tropical organic vibe”. Easy-fit shades are a boon for renters.

Colour is coming back, in particular yellow and red. Some fittings sit flush, for low ceilings in new-build homes.

Plug-in wall lights are easy, too. (196-199 Tottenham Court Road, W1; Westfield, W12; and at 255 Finchley Road, NW3; habitat.co.uk).

Twentytwentyone for contemporary style

This Islington shop has an understated contemporary style that doesn’t date. Get 15 per cent off lighting until Nov 3 (274-275 Upper St, N1; twentytwentyone.com; 020 7288 1996).

Their new Liquid Lights have the hot glass rolled over pebbles to make a gently undulating surface. Priced £410 and £635, in 16 colours (62 Cross Street, N1; 020 7359 5817; rothschildbickers.com).

Tom Dixon’s putting on the ritz

Winner of the 2019 London Design Medal, Tom Dixon flaunts his ritzy pendants, glam and super-glossy, in an atmospheric brick-vaulted showroom fringing the canal in King’s Cross. His fittings now have hi-tech built-in LEDs.

Not spooky, Pooky

“Table lamps add drama, elegance and a warm glow,” says Rohan Blacker of specialist store Pooky Lighting. Interior designers love his mix-and-match bases and shades.

Spend £50 and get a free LED bulb. And don’t stint on shades.

The width of a shade should roughly equal the height of the lamp base (25 Chelsea Wharf, 15 Lots Road, SW10; 020 7351 3003; pooky.com).

Oka revamp

A big room with dozens of decorative lamps has just been revamped at OKA. A new touch screen allows endless experiments.

“Lighting should be the star of every space,” says co-founder and creative director Sue Jones (155-167 Fulham Road, SW3; oka.com).

Big choice at John Lewis

There's an installation service and a huge lighting department at John Lewis.

Mid-century styling and multi-light designs are popular now, and crystal is still big for glamour. Integrated LED strips make lighting minimal and linear (300 Oxford Street, W1; 020 7629 7711; johnlewis.com).
