Our new Prime Minister Boris Johnson met the Queen at Buckingham Palace yesterday and, standing out against the ornate, historic interiors as she asked him to form the next Tory Government, a contemporary fan could be seen working tirelessly in the background.

The Queen's choice is a Dyson Pure Hot+Cool Link fan, still available for £429.99, which purifies air while working to heat or cool it.

And as new record temperatures for July were set today at 36C-plus, it's still worth investing in the right model to get you through the rest of the heatwave.

From smaller models suitable for desks or bedside tables to tower fans slim enough to slot into unused corners, we've found six of the best fans available to buy now.

Oscillating pedestal fans are a good choice if you have a larger room to chill, while floor fans can be tucked next to sofas for more targeted cooling.

If you’re concerned about compromising on style, there are plenty of looks and finishes to choose from – try Swan's retro fan in a desk or floor-standing model.

Be prepared to pay more for a bigger selection of power settings – the Dyson Hot+Cool Fan Heater boasts 10 but costs £349 – as well as quiet modes.

Budget options abound, though – Aldi's retro tabletop favourite is back in stock and will set you back less than £25.
