Creating a relaxing atmosphere is essential to getting a good night's sleep and just as important for your wellbeing too.

But as well as choosing the right mattress, investing in quality bed linen can help you relax as you settle down for the night.

"Choosing the right bed linen can have a huge impact on sleep," says Lucy Ackroyd, Design Manager at Christy.

"In a recent survey we found that 59 per cent of respondents struggle to sleep through the night, and 50 per cent of those consider fluctuation in temperature and discomfort to be the main cause.

"Cotton, silk, and linen are all natural fibres that are breathable and can help regulate temperature, keeping you warm in winter and cool in summer."

BEST FOR: BOTANICAL PRINTS

Botanical prints continue to be popular. Priced from just £12 for a double set, this palm print set from George at Asda taps into the trend and will brighten up your bedroom.

A dusty pink background helps to soften the bright greens. Pick out the lighter colours to help add accessories without distracting from the print.

The poly-cotton fabric helps it dry quicker so if the sun isn't shining it can be popped into the tumble dryer.

BEST FOR: COLOUR FIENDS

One of the easiest ways to update your bedroom on a budget is to change the bedding. If your bedroom makes you feel happy then you're more likely to settle down for the night.

Inject some colour into your room with this bright multi-coloured duvet set from Next, priced at £42 for a double set.

Thanks to the abundance of colour, it's easy to pick out one shade and base your room around it.

Alternatively, choose different accessories representing each colour in the duvet.

BEST FOR: £100 AND UNDER

If you have the money to invest, we love this subtle blue pinstriped duvet from Heals, priced at £79 for a double.

Taking inspiration from the nautical trend, it's reversible and the timeless design works well with any colour palette.

As the pattern is subtle it won't distract from other decorative features.

BEST FOR: 200 THREAD COUNT

In theory the finer the thread count, the softer the fabric, so you'll be looking for a thread count of 200 or over to ensure luxurious bedding – and help you sleep better.

Designed exclusively for Habitat by Margo Selby, this blue intricate bed linen, priced £160 for a double set, has been woven in Portugal using a double-layered jacquard technique.

The inky blue will stand out most in a bedroom with a neutral colour palette of bright whites or soft greys.

BEST FOR: HOTEL LUXURY

A good night's sleep can make or break a hotel stay and some guests find themselves quizzing the concierge for details of how to buy particularly comfortable mattresses, pillows or bed linen for their own homes.

Supplier to iconic hotels such as Claridge's, The Goring and The Ned, Tielle Love Luxury knows what hotels are looking for when it comes to perfecting that memorable boutique stay.

The brand's bed linen set most popular with hotels is the 300 thread count Classic Hotel option, priced from £92. As well as classic white, it's also available with a satin stripe.

We love the Soft and Strong 400 thread count set, from £122, for its sleek, crisp look and super soft feel. Favoured by The Dorchester and Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons, this set is both stylish and durable — ideal for nailing the hotel look at home.

BEST FOR: SUSTAINABILTY

If we get even close to the eight-hour average sleep recommended for adults, that's 17 weeks of every year spent in bed. So it's well worth investing in bed linen that looks and feels great — at minimal cost to the environment.

Undercover's sets are made from a mix of cotton and Tencel which is a blend of tree fibres like eucalyptus and one of the world's most eco-friendly materials.

The bed linen is produced at a family-run factory in Portugal which is OEKO-TEX certified, meaning the textiles are free from harmful chemicals and nearly 40 per cent of waste water is recycled.

The Undercover collection is available in three chic designs, all reversible. Our favourite is the Lido set, a stylish pairing of cobalt blue and white peach, which costs from £150.

Even the packaging is plastic free, using only recycled or recyclable materials.

BEST FOR: LINEN

For those who prefer their sheets to look louchely dishevelled, linen bedding is the stylish solution for the lazy housekeeper.

Piglet sheets come in a range of modish colours, but perhaps the prettiest is their sage green range – it's neutral with a subtle kick. A double duvet cover is £145.

The brand's bedding bundles are a smart touch for those who want to steer clear of anything too matchy-matchy, incorporating white sheets and pillowcases to break up the colours for the ultimate in laid back rustic chic.

And it's not just about looks. Linen bedding is durable, breathable, sustainable, the moths hate it and it gets softer with time.

BEST FOR: ARTISTIC NATURE

Inspired by the colours, flora and fauna of Australia's Blue Mountains, Sheridan's Willow Cove collection has nature at its heart.

An in-house team of artists, weavers and designers met at the brand's design studio in Sydney to collaborate on the project. Using watercolour techniques, with gentle and jewelled tones.

The nature motifs are serene and calming while the inky blue cotton sateen is a chic, stylish backdrop.

It's a focal point for any bedroom, particularly impactful against white walls and light-coloured floors. A double set starts from £111.

BEST FOR: COTTON

Man-made materials, such as polyester, absorb heat from your body, making it a struggle to cool down during the night.

This is why cotton will help make your sleeping pattern more consistent.

Boasting a vintage wash finish, Christy's Peonia pink bed linen, priced at £90 for a double set, is made from 100 per cent cotton and boasts a 200 thread count.

Thanks to the single block colour, it pairs well with a dark grey or inky blue colour scheme.

BEST FOR: ETHICAL COTTON

Bedfolk ensure that their cotton is woven and finished without any harmful chemicals or synthetics in a family-run mill in Portugal.

Their white double bedding bundle, priced at £99, consists of a duvet cover and two pillow cases.

Keen to help the environment, the bundles are packaged into reusable cotton bags, made from the off-cuts of their bedding.

BEST FOR: FEEL GOOD LUXURY

Both sustainable and ethically produced, Rise & Fall sheets are made by two New Zealand born, UK based entrepreneurs.

The brand's sateen sheets are soft to the touch and their neutral colour ensures that they go with all colour schemes.

A full double duvet set, which includes a 600 thread count duvet cover, costs £149.
