2018 and beyond: key interior trends to channel this year, from coloured marble to dinnerware on the wild side

Each new year brings with it exciting new interior trends and a plethora of articles showcasing ways to bring your home up to date.

But what to do with all the interiors accessories you splashed out on last year, not to mention the big-ticket purchases you might have made?

Magazines and blogs may show all-new room settings each season, but in reality no-one can afford to overhaul their interiors four times a year.

Happily, the spring and summer press shows for 2018 suggest we haven't seen the back of all of last year's key looks.

And certain items that made it big in 2017 will still be hitting the shops for many months to come, meaning your home shouldn't look dated if you invested heavily (financially or emotionally) in marble, copper or pineapple motifs.

Here are five 2017 trends that are still going strong this year.

MARBLE

Marble was everywhere in 2017 and it's showing no signs of going anywhere, which is great if you invested in key pieces last year.

Head to West Elm for this white marble-topped coffee table, ideal for adding a touch of sleek sophistication to your living room.

For an update requiring less commitment, ease yourself into the trend with this round marble trivet from the J by Jasper Conran range at Debenhams.

PINEAPPLES

The tropical fruit has been the star of interiors for a few years now, thanks to its symbolism as a sign of welcome, and it's still hot in 2018.

Your home will still be on-trend if you bought a few trinkets last year but you can give your bathroom a tropical makeover with this pineapple-shaped bath mat from George at ASDA.

Maisons Du Monde's kitsch glass and gold ceiling light pendant are also a nod to the retro trend.

COPPER

You couldn't scroll through your Instagram feed last year without seeing this metallic shade in every other post. You'll be seeing a lot more of it too, with high street brands continuing to launch copper ranges in 2018.

ANIMAL-THEMED INTERIORS

Dunelm has a cute animal-themed dinnerware collection, below, with dinner plates, side plates and bowls. It's available in shops from the end of February.

VELVET

Velvet was the fabric of choice for statement soft furnishings last year. This year the luxe texture is still a top pick for sofas, cushions and armchairs.

Taking inspiration from mid-century design, this mustard velvet cocktail chair, from Swoon Editions, has a scalloped back with retro covered buttons.

If you're looking to make a style statement, this pale blue velvet bed from Heal's will complement any bedroom colour scheme.
