Simultaneously rustic and rich, the red-and-brown tones of terracotta no longer belong to just the flower pots in the garden.

From fashion to gardening — with a special mention at this time of year for sunny Mediterranean holiday scenes — terracotta is cropping up everywhere.

Photo sharing website Pinterest has reported a staggering 95 per cent spike in terracotta-inspired colour schemes being pinned to inspiration boards across the UK.

This natural hue is being used to transform our home interiors too, adding an easy pop of colour.

This white and terracotta ombre plant pot, from Not On The High Street, is great to display your prized greenery

From vibrant burnt orange to more muted cinnamon, the versatile toasted hue is perfect for bringing warmth into cool, neutral colour schemes.

Pinterest says the rising interest in terracotta-coloured interiors is down to the earthy hue's flexibility.

“From trying new colours to warm up a room, to planning accessories that add a bold touch to a space, we’re seeing people on Pinterest searching and saving ideas for their home that enable flexibility.

"Terracotta is a versatile earthy tone that can create cosiness in a living space while also complimenting many colour palettes, from greens and pale blues, to deep purples and browns."

Adding warmth: statement velvet armchair, £730, Perch & Parrow

And it's not just for the summer months either, with the warm vibes a great way to make your home feel cosy and autumnal should the heatwave ever end.

A touch of terracotta in a plant pot or dinner plate will bring that Tuscan holiday feel home without too great a commitment, while larger statement pieces will look good through late summer and into autumn and winter.

With gold legs and a lush velvet finish, this statement armchair, priced at £730 from Perch & Parrow and pictured above, will be perfect for curling up with a good book when the autumn leaves start to match it in colour.

If you're willing to commit to transforming a whole room, or just painting a feature wall, then Valspar's Fire Within shade, priced at £28 for 2.5L, packs quite the punch. Pair with metallic home accessories to help make it pop.
