As the temperature drops and the weather gets frosty (and London turns colder than Moscow) vibrant jewel tones will add much-needed warmth to your interiors, without sacrificing on glamour.

Amethyst purple, emerald green and sapphire blue are great accent colours; pair them against fashionable dark and moody walls to help make the colours pop.

Alternatively, if you're simply updating a neutral backdrop, chose one or two hero pieces to ensure your home stands out from the crowd.

For tips on how to try out the trend, Lucy Ward, creative brand director at Trouva.com, offers some advice.

"Perk up neutral spaces by introducing jewel-toned decorative accents, such as a trio of glass vases, onto mantelpieces, shelves or coffee tables," she says.

"Coloured glassware is perfect for a subtler look, or go bold with a jewel-toned sofa strewn with deep blue or rose quartz velvet cushions.

"Determine your colour palette by drawing inspiration from precious gemstones like sapphires, rubies and amethysts and then mix and match these colours for maximum effect."

For those who dare, a striking emerald green upholstered bed from Living It Up creates a vivid statement against a neutral backdrop.

Danetti's striking side tables will add a vibrant pop of colour to living rooms, hallways or bedrooms, without taking up too much space. They are easy to move around and look great when paired with a contrasting colour.

Don't be afraid to mix materials either. Both silk and velvet cushions will refresh a sofa or bed for winter.

For a bathroom that stands out from the crowd opt for these electric blue wall tiles from Topps Tiles. Paired with brass accessories, they create a classic feel with a contemporary twist.

A sapphire blue ceiling light from Made.com, part of a collaboration with low-energy lightbulb brand Plumen, is a subtle way to embrace the trend — perfect if you only want to focus on colourful accents rather than a whole room.
