Dulux's Colour of the Year has been revealed as Tranquil Dawn — a cool mix of pale green, light grey and blue — perfect for creating a calming environment in the home.

A versatile colour that works well with many different tones, this light and airy shade for 2020 is set to take our homes into a new decade.

This cool hue is taps into the increasing interest in creating interior spaces inspired by nature. Think pared-back wood and houseplants set against calming blues and greens.

“These trends have been on the scene for a while, but 2020 will take it one step further with the use of minerals such as agate and earthy tones like sage,” says Martin Waller, CEO of Andrew Martin. He suggests pairing Tranquil Dawn with rich textures like velvet to create contrast and a feeling of natural luxury.

Selected to create calmness and to nurture wellbeing, Tranquil Dawn is also a sort of antidote to the hectic, non-stop pace of the digital age.

"A new decade heralds a new dawn and the hazy pale green tones of Tranquil Dawn are calming and comforting just when we need it most in our lives," says Marianne Shillingford, Creative Director at Dulux.

How to incorporate Tranquil Dawn into your interiors

Tranquil Dawn is one of those colours that will work in many different room layouts. So the team at Dulux have come up with four ways to use the Colour of the Year in our homes, whether you want a natural, toned down look, neutral interiors, a soft or bright palette.

For a light and airy look, mix with neutrals, such as a light beige or sandy tones, and add wooden accessories and indoor plants to complete the look.

Pair the colour with black-and-white cabinets and a brighter colour to perfectly offset the cooler Tranquil Dawn and lift your kitchen space.

Create a calming environment in your bedroom by introducing minimalist interiors and a purple-hued feature wall.

The final colour palette takes on a warm tone, with forest greens and a light teal blue. With golds, greys and deep reds added into the mix, this is a colour palette that creates a cosy atmosphere with the paleness of Tranquil Dawn adding balance to the overall look.

You can also mix the colour with neutral tones, cool blues and even gold tones.

While the colour creates a calm ambience on your walls, Tranquil Dawn also works well as a statement piece, such as a rug or sofa.

“Using the colour Tranquil Dawn in a feature sofa or sofa bed will bring light and life into your living room instantly,” adds John Darling, founder of Darlings of Chelsea.
