Queues outside newly reopened high street shops seemed to go on forever this week as retailers and customers navigate their way out of coronavirus lockdown.

Furnishing and design stores were among those to prop open their doors – touching is out, of course - with social distancing rules creating a shopping experience that's drastically different and looks set to remain that way for some time to come.

Many shops have been left with an oversupply of summer stock, so buyers are being wooed back with big summer sales discounts.

But if you’re one of the many experiencing serious Fogo – fear of going out – there are tempting reductions on interiors, furniture and home accessories that can easily be found online, too.

Sales are for picking up those non-essential homeware accessories you’ve been coveting, but can never quite justify splashing full price on. This large mustard flat-weave wool rug is great for your new home-working space or in a small hallway. Down from £120, it’s now £60 at Habitat.

For those who’ve spent lockdown trying – successfully or otherwise – to declutter, this bamboo-and-white lacquer shoe storage unit will keep your hallway or home entrance tidy. It’s priced £76, down from £95, also at Habitat.

This dusky pink velvet dining chair would also work as a statement piece in a corner of a bedroom. It’s £149, down from £199, at Dwell.

A Tom Raffield mirror, with sustainably sourced oak that has been steam-bent to mimic the look of a leather strap, is now priced £276 at Heal’s. Down from £325.
