While we're all grounded at home during lockdown, Netflix subscriptions are reportedly booming.

And what better time to seek inspiration for our DIY and home renovation projects?

There’s a feast of home improvement shows to devour on the hugely popular streaming service right now. Here are 9 of the best.

The Apartment

Flamboyant British interior design don Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, former Changing Rooms star, has been a host on The Apartment, a Malaysia-based show with people competing to redesign flats across southeast Asia.

It launched in 2011 and is Asia’s longest-running reality TV show. However, UK viewers can only watch the fourth season, a celebrity special featuring models, DJs and actors transforming flats in high-end blocks in Thailand. There’s drama and gossip galore.

Stay Here

The short-term rental market has come to a shuddering halt because of Covid-19 but this show lets you reminisce – and plan for a future free of lockdown. Homeowners across America transform their properties, from everyday short lets or holiday homes into “moneymaking showstoppers”.

Property experts Genevieve Gorder and Peter Lorimer are handing out the advice and there’s no doubt America’s short-term rental market has seen huge popularity, dominated by the likes of Airbnb.

So, for when more normal times return, here’s how to turn your second home into a business.

Amazing Interiors

The ultimate lesson on not judging a book by its cover, this 12-part series showcases some of the world's most extraordinary interiors hidden behind unremarkable exteriors.

From a sporty home featuring a skateboard halfpipe and backyard roller coaster, to a property with a waterfall under the bed, Amazing Interiors takes us through unassuming front gates and into jaw-dropping homes across the globe. This is perfect escapism during a crisis.

Tiny House Nation

This home renovation show is all about the tiny house movement, which advocates simple living in small homes. Renovation experts John Weisbarth and Zack Giffin travel across America “helping families prep for the tiny lifestyle and create hyper customised mini homes”.

The hosts help in the design and building of homes that are no bigger than 500sq ft. This could be essential viewing for Londoners stuck in small flats for lockdown.

The World's Most Extraordinary Homes: Piers Taylor and Caroline Quentin travel the world to tour unconventional homes in extreme places
Netflix

The World's Most Extraordinary Homes

Caroline Quentin and award-winning architect Piers Taylor visit spectacular and/or quirky architect-designed properties, including houses built into cliffs or perched on mountaintops, and an “S-shaped” home made almost entirely from glass.

Quentin and Taylor spend time in each house, marvelling at the jaw-dropping designs on display.

Cabins in the Wild with Dick Strawbridge

Contestants transform humble cabins into luxurious glamping tourist accommodation in this unique take on a property renovation show.

Set in Wales, engineer Dick Strawbridge and his co-presenter, master craftsman Will Hardie follow eight teams from across the UK who compete weekly to design unique custom cabins, inspired by the local landscape, traditions and myths and complete with kingsize beds, en suites and wood burners.

Strawbridge and Hardie design a ninth cabin themselves. If you’ve ever dreamed of getting back to nature by owning your own little woodland getaway, this one’s for you.

How To Live Mortgage Free

Property presenter Sarah Beeny meets homeowners living the dream - ie those who don’t have the burden of paying a mortgage.

While owning property mortgage free remains a fantasy for most, Beeny goes round the country proving that this happy state is indeed achievable, with a bit of smart money management.

From Grand Designs-style projects to houseboats, this show provides a fascinating insight into how people can own a home without a lifetime of debt. You’ll either come away marvelling at their entrepreneurship, or cursing Britain’s broken housing market.

Instant Hotel

This Australian take on Four in a Bed isn’t strictly a home improvement show - but when the drama is this good, who’s complaining?

It’s a series with everything: sun, drama and fascinating rivalry as couples compete for the title of best instant hotel.

It follows homeowners, who have transformed their properties into hotels, as they stay overnight in other contestants' conversions, with each couple scoring their experience.

Tidying up with Marie Kondo

Launched off the back of her phenomenally successful book, Tidying Up with Marie Kondo sees the decluttering queen visit a different family each week in need of her skills.

Every family she meets has different backgrounds and the Japanese tidying guru tackles their individual needs using guidance and tips from her KonMari method.

This show introduced KonMari to millions and has been credited for boosting donations to charity shops as people clear out their stuff.
