What do you get if you send 20 sculptors and garden designers into a tent packed with flowers and chicken wire, to face a string of devilishly difficult challenges and the judgment of surreal comedian Vic Reeves?

New Netflix series The Big Flower Fight is a floristry sculpting knockout contest, in which 10 expert teams of two from around the world compete to create “super-sized structures festooned with flowers and foliage”.

With the action taking place in a domed tent in countryside near Maidstone in Kent, it's like a floral version of The Great British Bake Off – but swap flour for flowers and frantic fiddling with pastry for even more frantic grappling with larger-than-life sculptures smothered in blooms.

Floristry and carpentry skills will be tested to the limit as contestants rise to the towering challenges they are set. Giant insects are sculpted from grasses, while floral fantasy couture-inspired frocks are painstakingly crafted.

"I want these giant structures to be colourful, I want them to be beautiful - and bigger than big," says series judge Kristen Griffith-VanderYacht, award-winning international florist to the stars and owner/creative director of luxury design studio, Wild Bloom Floral.

Best in Bloom prizes

The winner of each challenge will be awarded the weekly "Best in Bloom" prize and will have a chance to win the ultimate honour of designing their own living sculpture to be put on display at London’s Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew.

The losing team's creation will be sent to the "compost pile" and they will be eliminated.

The series is hosted by comedian Natasia Demetriou - who starred as Nadja in BBC2’s vampire mockumentary series What We Do In The Shadows – and Vic Reeves, best known for Vic and Bob – his comic double act with writer and performer Bob Mortimer.

The contestants

The contestants will be challenged to use sustainable materials and to think creatively about urban horticulture.

They include a Chelsea Flower Show Gold medal winner, a Master Florist, landscape architects, a private school groundsman, a wedding florist, a horticultural lecturer, a fashion designer and former garage band singer and a photographic artist.

When can you watch it?

Eight-part series The Big Flower Fight will be streamed on Netflix from Monday May 18.
