Choosing the right lawnmower that suits your grass and garden size can be tricky but is essential.

Whether it's electric, cordless or petrol-powered, these clean-up machines are one of the best time-saving tools you can buy to keep your grass looking good year-round.

Laura Simonett, outdoor manager at B&Q, recommends three different types of mowers, depending on the size of your outdoor space.

1. Corded electric lawnmover

Ideal for all garden sizes, a corded electric mower is a great option for those who want a hassle-free experience.

There's no need to worry about recharging a battery or topping up the fuel, you simply plug it into a power main.

"They are surprisingly quiet, meaning there is no need to worry about upsetting the neighbours," says Laura.

2. Cordless lawnmower

Cordless mowers are a great option if you don't have electricity outside to help power it. Long extension cables can be a faff, not to mention a safety issue if you're not paying attention.

"Choose one with a long battery life and interchangeable battery system meaning you can have a number of different garden power tools, but only need one battery to run them all," explains Laura.

3. Petrol lawnmower

If you're lucky enough to have a large garden, a rarity in London, a petrol lawnmower is the one for you. Thanks to the impressive power they're perfect for tackling overgrown and wild gardens too.

"They're similar to battery-powered lawnmowers as they are portable and offer unrestricted movement, and tend to be the most powerful mowing option available," says Laura.

Best for: time poor Londoners

Scheduling in time to spruce up your lawn when you work long hours is hard. This is where a robotic mover comes in handy.

Looking like something out of the TV show Robot Wars, Flymo's 1200 R robotic lawnmover, priced at £510, in the brand's signature orange colour, does all the hard work.

You'll never have to empty a grass box again. It cuts the grass little by little every day, dispensing the fine cuttings back into the lawn to help fertilise it.

The Hayter Harrier® 48 is great for attempting a professional finish on your lawn

Best for: a professional finish

If you're someone who admires the grass at a local football game or cricket match then there's a mower that helps create the same vibes in your own backyard.

The Hayter Harrier® 48, priced from £899, creates stripy finishes the groundskeepers at Wembley Stadium would be proud of thanks to the two-piece ribbed rollers.

Best for: wild gardens

Coming with a two-year guarantee in case anything goes wrong, this petrol lawnmower from Wilko is great for fair-weather gardeners who don't always pay attention to their outside space.

The mower specialises in long and overgrown grass — and will save you plenty of time.

The Erbauer ELM18-Li Cordless Lawnmower is a perfect solution for large gardens as you won't need to hunt out an extra-long extension cable in order to power it

Best for: large gardens

A cordless mower is the perfect solution for large gardens as you won't need to hunt out an extra-long extension cable in order to power it.

The Erbauer ELM18-Li Cordless Lawnmower, priced at £398, comes with two batteries and a charger — it takes 60 minutes to fully charge a battery.

Special technology helps to regulate the heat of the battery to stop it from overheating and help to keep it running for longer.

Best for: under £50

Priced at £49, the Sovereign 32cm corded electric lawn mower is ideal for cutting medium-sized lawns.

It has three different adjustable cutting heights to help suit a range of conditions. It's a good budget option.

Best for: easy storage

The handle on the Black + Decker BEMW351-GB electric lawnmower, priced at £59, folds down making it easy to keep stored in your shed or garage.

It comes with a 10-metre cable making it ideal to use on a more compact lawn. It's not one to use if you boast a large outside space.
