Gardening Q&A: specialist plant movers?

Horticultural advice from the experts at the RHS
Question: I would be very grateful if you could give me contact details of specialists who could move our plants from Islington to Barnet.

We have some very large pot plants, including a magnolia, which is over 3 metres tall, that will need to be moved through our property to the mover's vehicle. This will be a considerable operation, particularly as cutting back a magnolia is not advised, apart from new growth.

Answer: These large pot plants require the careful approach you would have for moving a grand piano! Plant movers are harder to come by, however.

Removals company Pickfords mention on their website that they can move plants in heavy pots as long as you discuss the details with them at the survey stage.

Since this is a question we are sometimes asked, I put a quick call in to Majestic Trees (01582 843881) who, although they don’t offer the service themselves, were very helpful and can give you contact details for a couple of possibilities.

Not having tried any of the companies, we cannot recommend individuals, but, especially with any smaller companies, just check that they are insured, should any mishap occur.
