Gardening Q&A: hibiscus
Horticultural advice from the experts at the RHS
Question: I have two hibiscus plants which have never flowered. Please advise! The type of hibiscus is Rose of Sharon. Answer: To flower well, Hibiscus syriacus (Rose of Sharon) needs full sun and sheltered spot. It may be however that this year's dull summer conditions have affected flowering. Another possibility of dropping flower buds is a lack of nutrients or fluctuating moisture levels. To encourage flowering, apply a high-potash fertiliser, such as tomato feed, during the growing season. Mulching will retain soil moisture and help suppress weeds. Making sure that the plant is watered well during dry summer spells should help too, especially on light soils.
