Take a tour of south-east London's property hotspots

South-east London is emerging as one of the capital's top hunting grounds for first-time buyers, with 15,000 starter homes bought there in the last year, according to new research by Hamptons International.

Good-value areas furthest from central London have seen the highest levels of demand - such as Beckenham, Crystal Palace and Bromley, where homes with two or more bedrooms can still be found priced under £300,000.

One-bedroom flats are more popular with first-timers who are considering postcodes closer to the centre, such as Brixton or Surrey Quays.

"For some first-time buyers it's simply a case of finding a home that they can afford," says Johnny Morris, head of research at Hamptons International. "But an increasing number are choosing to skip a step in their housing journey, looking for a bigger home they can stay in for longer."
