Could it be more wishful thinking, or are we actually getting a proper Nintendo Direct broadcast this week?

Nintendo has given us a few mini Directs and some smaller showcases showing off indie titles and Nintendo partners who have games coming to the Switch, but we've not heard anything about Nintendo's own huge first-party titles for a while now.

The last Nintendo Direct Mini was in July and it revealed that Atlus' Shin Megami Tensei series will be coming to the Switch.

Otherwise known as SMT, this is the series which gave birth to another title by the company called Persona, another massively popular franchise in its own right.

In lieu of a big summer Direct, there have been only rumours and forceful demands to fill the void, all of which are calling for a Nintendo Direct to take place sometime soon.

Friday, August 28, is the planned date if the fresh speculation from VentureBeat is to be believed.

This date was thrown around during the latest episode of GB Decides 160, a podcast hosted by VentureBeat journalist Josh Grubb and others, where Grubb said: "That's the date I've heard".

“I hear in the back of my mind, there's always that sort of ringing as an echo, and it's like, okay, I think there's a lot of science pointing to next week being a general Direct. And there is a general Direct coming up that seems like for sure," he added.

As for what might be announced in a Direct? Only time will tell, but people have some strong opinions about what they'd like to see.

The most convincing rumours going around at the moment is a full remaster of the Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword is on the way after a Switch version of the game was briefly listed on Amazon.

Of course, there's always the rumours of a collection of 3D Super Mario games which fans have been speculating about for a long time.

This collection is thought to include the likes of Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, Galaxy and Galaxy 2.

Nintendo itself has promised us more partner showcases like the recent one in July so we can definitely expect to see more of these as the year continues.

It would stand to reason that we might see a Nintendo announcement of some persuasion this week, especially with Gamescom kicking off this Thursday.

That's not to say Nintendo has been quiet by any stretch, mind you, as the company has been one having exceptional year despite Covid-19.

2020 saw the release of Animal Crossing: New Horizons which is the second best-selling game on the Nintendo Switch, with over 22 million units sold.

Further to this, Nintendo also announced an upcoming RPG Bravely Default 2, the release of Paper Mario 2 and, among many others, an expansion for Fire Emblem: Three Houses earlier this year, all of which proved to be extremely popular.

For now, we can only wait and see if the rumour comes true this Friday.
