A Who Wants to be a Millionaire? contestant came fiendishly close to taking home the jackpot prize - but missed out after deciding not to go with his guess.

Andrew Townsley made it through the first 14 questions in Tuesday night’s episode, getting to the final one with a lifeline intact.

A question on motorsports then stood between the retired doctor and the huge jackpot.

Host Jeremy Clarkson asked him: “Which of these iconic races was held first?”

The four options were Le Mans 24 Hours, the Monaco Grand Prix, Indy 500 or Isle Of Man TT.

Townsley was leaning towards Isle of Man TT but unsure, he used his Phone a Friend lifeline.

Unfortunately, the pal he contacted didn’t help clear things up and Townsley decided against risking the £500,000 he had so far pocketed.

“I don't know the answer and it's just too much money to lose,” he told host Clarkson. “Having got so far and to go on a whim I think would be foolish and [his dream holiday destination] Niagara Falls is looking very nice at this time.”

Having taken the cash, Townsley revealed his best guess would have been Isle of Man TT - and of course, Clarkson then told him this would have been correct.

Speaking to the Sun, he insisted he has no regrets about the decision.

“It was very tempting, being offered that much,” Townsley said.

“I thought, ‘hmm, how close am I? Sixty per cent?’ But I was actually 50/50. If I still had the 50/50 lifeline I would have."

Celebrations: Townsley after his win

Just five people (well, six if you include Charles Ingram) have won the Millionaire top prize.

Judith Keppel became the first person to do so in November 2000 and the most recent jackpot winner was Ingram Wilcox, who scooped the prize in 2006.
