Richard Madden has been snubbed from this year's BAFTA TV nominations - and fans are fuming.

Madden, 32, was expected to receive a nod for his role as PC David Budd in explosive BBC Drama Bodyguard, but he missed out to Hugh Grant (A Very English Scandal), Benedict Cumberbatch (Patrick Melrose), Chance Perdomo (Killed By My Debt) and Lucian Msamati (Kiri) in the Leading Actor category.

Fans struggled to comprehend how Madden could win a Golden Globe for the role but get snubbed by BAFTA as they argued Bodyguard would have been nothing without him.

“Bodyguard without Richard Madden is impossible,” tweeted one fan.

Another posted: “Tell me how Richard Madden was nominated for and won a Golden Globe and an NTA, as well as got a Critic’s Choice nomination for Bodyguard but y’all slept on him this way? Smdh.”

Madden's co-star Keeley Hawes, whose character Julia Montague's death was one of TV's biggest ever twists, is up for Leading Actress. She will face competition from Killing Eve's Jodie Comer and Sandra Oh as well as Ruth Wilson for her role as her late grandmother in Mrs Wilson, while the show is in contention for Drama Series.

Jed Mercurio's hit became the UK's most-watched TV show since records began in 2002, with the gripping finale watched by an audience of 17.1 million. It was also BBC iPlayer's most successful boxset ever with over 38 million requests.

The series followed police protection officer and Afghanistan war veteran Budd as he was assigned to Home Secretary Montague. A shock twist saw Montague killed off in a massive explosion midway through the series leaving fans clinging to the hope of a further twist revealing she was in fact still alive.

It will face competition from assassin drama Killing Eve which has bagged six BAFTA TV nominations including Leading Actress for Jodie Comer and Sandra Oh who played the murdering Villanelle and spy Eve respectively.

Winners will be honoured at the ceremony at London’s Royal Festival Hall on Sunday, May 12.
