Lucifer fans were sent into a frenzy after they were treated to a first look at season four by Netflix.

Viewers of the American comedy, which stars Tom Ellis, were left speechless after the popular streaming site gave them a sneak peek at the upcoming series.

The streaming platform shared a clip of Ellis looking devilish as he stepped out of the pool shirtless with a glass of whisky in hand.

Shooting the camera an evil look, Ellis grinned as hellish music blared in the background before the Netflix credit rolled, revealing the new season will air in 666 hours time on May 8.

Excited users flocked to the comments to suggest that both Ellis and the show will be the “death of [them]”.

One user wrote: “In need of resurrection. #Lucifer will be the death of me.”

“I'm getting paid a lot of money for doing my job, which I'm patently NOT doing right now. Can I say the Devil made me do it?,” another added.

A third said: "I can't stop watching I really can't help me please!"

Teasing the upcoming season, Ellis previously told Entertainment Weekly: “I’ll say this is without a doubt our strongest season that we’ve done, for many reasons.

“A lot of it has to do with where we left our story and how we pick it up, and what we deal with this season is stuff we’ve never really dealt with before.

“There was always this conceit that no one believes Lucifer is the devil. But now that is common knowledge amongst some of our major characters.”

The trailer comes after the show was cancelled by US broadcaster Fox last year.

However, it was then picked up by Netflix and the upcoming season is expected to consist of 10 episodes.

Lucifer season 4 airs on Netflix on May 8
