EastEnders has returned to UK screens with “series 2,” kicking things off after its lockdown hiatus.

Fans are thrilled to have the soap back on screen, which started again on Monday, September 7.

The BBC EastEnders Twitter account teased its return on Monday by posting a graphic about “series 2” beginning, after the show halted for the first time in 35 years this year.

One Twitter user wrote: “The fact that #EastEnders returned the night before my birthday. The only present I need. Here's to an epic Series 2!”

Another added: “WHAT. A. SERIES 2. PREMIERE. Welcome back #EastEnders! You’ve been greatly missed."

Meanwhile, others saw the humour in the soap announcing a “series 2,” joking about the apparent 35-year first season.

“Coinciding with the announcement of Series 2, the BBC have confirmed the release of a limited edition #steelbook #boxset of #EastEnders Series 1,” wrote one user.

“Me trying to get through the last six thousand plus episodes of EastEnders before Series 2 starts tonight,” wrote another.

A third wrote: “missed season one of Eastenders. will I be able to understand season 2 or should I binge?”

The BBC One soap is back on screen after introducing a number of safety measures and social distancing precautions to keep cast and crew safe.

Perspex screens have used between the actors to bring them close together without breaking distancing rules.

“[They] bring people really close together and that’s really good because it gives an intimacy to performance that wouldn’t be possible otherwise,” executive producer Jon Sen said.

The return of the show will reflect how the characters themselves dealt with life under lockdown conditions.

The soap announced ahead of its return that Chantelle will be tragically killed by her husband Gray in a plotline that analyses how domestic abuse victims struggled under lockdown.
