What’s Dirty John about?

The first series of the show was based on the true story of John Meehan and Debra Newell and was inspired by the podcast of the same name. It centres around a story of love going wrong, after the show’s protagonist, John, manipulates his new partner.

The success of the series inspired a documentary of the real life story called Dirty John: The Dirty Truth.

Much like the first season, the second is also based on a true story. Dirty John: The Betty Broderick Story follows Betty, who shot and killed her husband Dan and his second wife Linda in 1989.

Amanda Peet plays the role of Betty in the new drama, and the story sees the family going from struggling young students to a wealthy family. However, when Betty suspects Dan of cheating, things begin to go downhill in an extreme manner. Thanks to a successful legal career, Dan wins sole custody of the couple's children, and Betty plans her revenge.

The new series promises to be just as gripping as the first, so pencil the release date into your diary now.

Dirty John: The Betty Broderick Story will be released on Netflix on August 14
