The Umbrella Academy returned to Netflix last month showing the second instalment of misadventures for the messed-up Hargreeves brood.

Following their failed attempt to save humanity from total destruction (that they may have had an accidental hand in), the group manage to send themselves back in time throughout varying points of 1960’s Texas in order to change the course of history.

But while they may have defeated the Handler and her double agent Lila, avoided the Swede assassins and saved the world from an impending nuclear holocaust – the timeline still isn’t right.

It seems the Umbrella Academy could have accidentally written themselves out of existence when they arrive back at the mansion, as they stare down at the newly formed Sparrow Academy – seemingly headed up by an alive-and-well Ben.

After ending on that spectacular cliffhanger, it seems The Umbrella Academy is set up for a third season; it’s a reasonable enough assumption, following reports the first season of the show was watched by over 45 million households and the fact writer Gerard Way is already penning a new volume.

Here’s what we could expect from The Umbrella Academy season three….

At the time of writing, Netflix is yet to confirm whether The Umbrella Academy will return for a third season.

It’s likely the streaming giant are waiting to see whether the series replicates the success of its first season.

But considering the show’s cult fanbase, its stellar cast and the fact it has retained the top spot on the Netflix UK charts, it’s looking highly likely we will see more from the Hargreeves clan at some point.

As mentioned previously, the second season of the show has left a number of loose ends in need of tying.

Having arrived back to 2nd April 2019, the day after the initial apocalypse from the first season, it’s clear the timeline isn’t right.

Their father Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore) is still alive, as is Ben (Justin H. Min) – and the Umbrella Academy has been replaced by the shadowy Sparrow Academy.

There’s also a seemingly random floating cube which is also spotted.

Showrunner Steve Blackman has teased he’d like to explore the Hargreeves’ complicated family history and their ongoing daddy issues should they be picked up for a third season.

“If you look carefully, he’s our Hargreeves, but he looks a little different. It would be a good guess if we get another season that they have a chance to try to work out their issues,” he told TV Guide.

“They did try in season two to some extent, but obviously that Hargreeves knew nothing about them. And you know, this Hargreeves is an older man, but they have a chance to sort of talk to him again, and hopefully they do better than they did in season two.”

Blackman added to Inverse that the as-yet-to-be-confirmed third series could consider the possibilities that the Hargreeves are not the only people to have superpowers.

After all, the first season does mention that in the strange phenomenon that 43 women around the world spontaneously gave birth at the same time – which begs the question of what happened to the others.

Lila escapes during the final showdown

We sort of get an answer to this in the second series when viewers are introduced to Lila (Ritu Arya) – who we learn has mimicking abilities and is an assassin working with her adoptive mother, The Handler (Kate Walsh).

After learning from Five (Aidan Gallagher) that he only killed Lila’s real parents following orders from The Handler, a stunned Lila escapes from the ongoing battle with a time travelling briefcase when she sees The Handler murdered by the Swedish assassin just seconds later.

The third series will like explore where the hugely powerful mercenary escaped to.

“As much as she wants to be part of a family, especially knowing how her mother has betrayed her, she’s had a very lonely existence up until now,” actor Ritu Arya told Entertainment Weekly. “So as much as it’s wonderful to hear she’s got this family that’s welcoming her, I think it’s too much in that moment for her to take in, and that’s why she makes a run for it. I think she just wants to get away from them.

“Whatever time period that is, wherever in the world it is, as long as it’s not that moment it doesn’t really matter.”
