Trap could show Pleat door

U-Turn: Giovanni Trapattoni

Giovanni Trapattoni has done a U-turn over the Tottenham manager's job and in doing so has put a huge question mark over the future of David Pleat.

The dream team now being put forward consists of the Italian with former Spurs player and current Hull boss Peter Taylor as his No2.

The Italy coach is keeping Spurs waiting over his signature because his wife is ill and he is concerned about the effect the travelling will have on her. But other obstacles appear to have been removed.

Despite Spurs' denials that their search for a new manager was being hampered by Pleat's position as director of football, Trapattoni recently distanced himself from the job due to the control Pleat was still going to exert over transfers.

The fact that now appears to be no longer a problem would suggest that Pleat's role is either being changed or that speculation over his future may have some foundation.

His tenure as acting manager since Glenn Hoddle's dismissal in September has not gone well, with Premiership safety only being ensured last weekend.

Martin O'Neill continues to be the club's first choice but they are reluctant to pay more than his existing £2million a year at Celtic for his services.
