The FA Women’s Super League and Championship seasons have been ended with immediate effect.
A joint statement from the two leagues’ Board said the decision had been made “in the best interest of the women’s game” and would allow the focus to switch towards preparations for next season.
No decision has yet been made on sporting outcomes - such as crowning champions and deciding promotions, relegations and European qualification – but the leagues say they have “discussed various recommendations” in consultation with clubs which will be sent to the FA Board.
A statement said: “Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the FA Women’s Super League & Women’s Championship Board has been in regular consultation with clubs and key stakeholders from across both leagues to identify the most suitable and appropriate way to conclude the 2019-20 season, and to give clubs and players the clarity and support they need at this time.
“Supporting the welfare of the clubs and players will continue to be our primary concern throughout this process, which also involved a robust and thorough examination of the logistical, operational and financial challenges that the game currently faces.”
At the time of the coronavirus shutdown in March, Manchester City were one point clear of Chelsea in second having played a game more. Arsenal were also in title contention, a further three points behind Chelsea, but also with a game in hand over the leaders.
The relegation picture is similarly tight, with just three points separating the bottom three of Bristol City, Birmingham and Liverpool and only one team to go down.
