England kick off their Uefa Nations League campaign with a trip to Iceland on Saturday.

Following an extended 2019/20 season due to the coronavirus pandemic, European football will have a short international break before most of the new club campaigns kick off next week.

The Three Lions finished third last time out in the tournament, with Portugal lifting the trophy in 2019 after beating Netherlands in the final.

The Nations League may initially have been seen as an unwanted competition, but has come to offer Gareth Southgate's side valuable competitive experience as well as the possibility of a trophy.

With Belgium and Denmark joining England and Iceland in a tough League A, Southgate can ill-afford a defeat in the opening game - and the Three Lions will want to banish those painful memories of a shock Euro 2016 exit at the hands of Strákarnir okkar (Our Boys).

Date, time and venue

Iceland vs England is scheduled for a 5pm BST kick-off on Saturday, 5 September, 2020.

The match will be played behind closed doors at Laugardalsvöllur in Reykjavík, with no fans due to be present due to social distancing guidelines.

England squad and team news

Aston Villa star Jack Grealish has received his first senior call-up after Southgate's squad was hit by a number of withdrawals.

The Villa skipper was initially left out of the squad, a decision that raised eyebrows given his excellent form last season. However, he has now been added to the 24-man party after Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford and Tottenham midfielder Harry Winks both pulled out of the squad.

On Saturday, Southgate added Arsenal's Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Wolves' Conor Coady to his squad, after Man United defender Harry Maguire had been dropped following his Greek court case.

Squad: Tammy Abraham (Chelsea), Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool), Conor Coady (Wolverhampton Wanderers), Eric Dier (Tottenham Hotspur), Phil Foden (Manchester City), Joe Gomez (Liverpool), Jack Grealish (Aston Villa), Mason Greenwood (Manchester United), Dean Henderson (Manchester United), Danny Ings (Southampton), Harry Kane (Tottenham Hotspur), Michael Keane (Everton), Ainsley Maitland-Niles (Arsenal), Tyrone Mings (Aston Villa), Mason Mount (Chelsea), Kalvin Phillips (Leeds United), Jordan Pickford (Everton), Nick Pope (Burnley), Declan Rice (West Ham United), Jadon Sancho (Borussia Dortmund), Raheem Sterling (Manchester City), Kieran Trippier (Atletico Madrid), Kyle Walker (Manchester City), James Ward-Prowse (Southampton)

Prediction: Iceland 1-2 England

Iceland narrowly missed out on Euro 2020 qualifying to France and Turkey, and will be a threat to England.

However, England should have enough attacking threat to get the three points.

Head to head (h2h) history and results

The only competitive fixture between the two sides came in the round of 16 at Euro 2016, when goals from when goals from Ragnar Sigurdsson and Kolbeinn Sigthórsson sealed a 2-1 comeback win after an early penalty from Wayne Rooney.
