Harry Kane injury: Tottenham and England striker out until April

Tottenham have confirmed that Harry Kane has been ruled out until April following a hamstring injury.

Spurs announced that Kane will need surgery after suffering a ruptured tendon in his left hamstring during the 1-0 Premier League defeat against Southampton on New Year's Day, and will return to training in April.

The news comes as a huge blow to both Spurs and England, with Kane now in a race to be fully fit for Euro 2020.

A club statement read: "Following ongoing assessment by our medical staff over the past week, we can confirm that Harry Kane will undergo surgery to repair a ruptured tendon in his left hamstring.

"The striker suffered the injury during our Premier League fixture against Southampton last week and specialists have advised surgery after further review of the injury.

"The decision to undergo surgery is not expected to impact the timeframe that the England captain will be sidelined, with the expectation that he will return to training in April."

Earlier in the week, Kane alluded to a lengthy injury layoff with a Twitter post which read: "Head up. Tough times don’t last, tough people do."

Kane will now miss the majority of the rest of the season for Tottenham, leaving Jose Mourinho's side light in terms of attacking options as they fight for Champions League qualification.

The news also comes as a major setback to England's hopes of success at Euro 2020. Kane is Gareth Southgate's captain, and has scored 32 goals in 45 appearances for the national team.

England's first group-stage game of the summer finals is against Croatia on 14 June. Kane will have an estimated two months of recovery time providing he returns to training on schedule - but even if he manages to make an immediate return to first-team football at the start of April, Spurs will have just seven League games remaining (and possible cup commitments).
