Jose Mourinho’s would have collected silverware in his first season back at Stamford Bridge if the squad had strikers capable of consistently finding the net, according to Graeme Souness.

Writing in The Sunday Times, Souness claims that Chelsea could have won the Premier League if they had a similar potency to title rivals Manchester City and Liverpool.

The Blues, who look destined to fall narrowly short of domestic success and fell at the semi-final hurdle in the Champions League on Wednesday, have been linked with a number of strikers and Mourinho has said the club will make 'two critical signings' in the summer transfer market.

Former Liverpool manager Souness has suggested the Chelsea boss should focus on sealing a couple of free-scoring forwards.

He wrote: “What Mourinho was hinting at earlier in the season has proven to be correct. He can’t come out and, publicly at least, say that he doesn’t fancy any of his strikers and because of them they are not going to win the big trophies, but that’s how it turned out.

“If he’d had two strikers capable of 20 goals each, where would Chelsea be now? Probably top of the Premier League and looking ahead to a Champions League final.”

Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa has been strongly linked with a move to Stamford Bridge this summer and Souness believes the Spaniard has the right attitude to succeed in the Premier League.

“He will be a star in our football, in any football. He does not possess silky skills, but his never-say-die attitude and bravery would make you want him at your club. People like that inspire others with their tenacity. He’s so enthusiastic that he would play in any system.”
